Composable commerce enters 2027 with a different agenda than a year ago. The architecture question is largely settled; the open questions now are how storefronts work with AI shopping agents, who owns the frontend layer as vendors consolidate, and how composable projects compete for budgets that are flowing mainly into AI infrastructure.

This outlook does not repeat the 2026 inventory. It looks at what has moved since then and what product and marketing owners should plan for in the next budget cycle.

## Where 2026 left off

In spring 2026, the conversation was about adoption: how many organizations had moved to modular stacks, which benefits arrived and where projects stalled. That picture is covered in detail in our review of [what composable adopters got right in 2026 and where they still stumble](https://www.laioutr.com/en/blog/composable-commerce-2026-state). The short version: most teams agreed that modular backends were the right direction, and most of the friction sat in operations, ownership and the presentation layer.

Since then, four developments have changed the planning assumptions for 2027.

## Shift 1: Agentic commerce moved from demos to protocols

Within roughly six months, agent-led shopping went from concept slides to published standards and live programs:

- **September 2025:** Stripe and OpenAI released the [Agentic Commerce Protocol](https://stripe.com/newsroom/news/stripe-openai-instant-checkout), an open standard for letting AI agents complete purchases, alongside Instant Checkout in ChatGPT for US users.
- **December 2025:** Shopify introduced [Agentic Storefronts](https://www.shopify.com/news/winter-26-edition-agentic-storefronts) in its Winter '26 Edition, syndicating merchant catalogs to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, with the merchant remaining merchant of record.
- **January 2026:** Google announced the [Universal Commerce Protocol](https://infoq.com/news/2026/01/google-agentic-commerce-ucp) at the NRF conference, co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart and covering discovery, cart, checkout and post-purchase steps.
- **March 2026:** According to [reporting summarized by Shopifreaks](https://www.shopifreaks.com/openai-pivots-from-instant-checkout-to-an-app-based-shopping-model-inside-chatgpt/), OpenAI wound down Instant Checkout in favor of an app-based model in which retailers build their own shopping experiences inside ChatGPT.

The last point matters most for 2027 planning. The first wave assumed that agents would absorb the purchase and make the storefront secondary. The correction shows the opposite tendency: retailers are expected to bring their own experience, data and logic into agent channels. A concrete example is product content: an agent can only recommend a product reliably if attributes, availability and prices are structured, current and consistent with what the storefront shows.

Our earlier analysis of [how the agent checkout protocols are converging](https://www.laioutr.com/en/blog/agentic-commerce-protocols-acp-ap2-experience-layer-2026) already pointed to the experience layer as the open question. For 2027, that question becomes a budget item.

## Shift 2: The frontend layer became the contested layer

In 2026, the frontend was often treated as the last step of a composable project. Heading into 2027, it is where several strategic interests meet:

- **Commerce platforms** are extending their reach into presentation and AI channels, because whoever controls the catalog feed and the storefront controls the customer relationship.
- **Content platforms** position themselves as the experience layer for AI-generated and personalized content.
- **Merchants** need one place where brand, performance and accessibility rules apply across the web storefront, campaign pages and machine-readable outputs for agents.

The practical consequence is a governance question rather than a technology question: which system decides what a product page looks like, which data an agent receives and who can change both without a development ticket. A [composable headless frontend](https://www.laioutr.com/en/composable-headless-frontend) that sits on top of several backends keeps that decision with the merchant instead of with a single vendor.

## Shift 3: Consolidation reached the composable stack

Composable promised best-of-breed components from independent vendors. In 2026, the market showed that independence is not permanent. The most visible example: in June 2026, Salesforce signed a [definitive agreement to acquire Contentful](https://www.cmswire.com/digital-experience/salesforce-acquires-contentful-to-power-agentforce-content/), one of the best-known headless content platforms, with the stated goal of adding a composable content layer to its Agentforce and Data 360 stack. Contentful has stated that its API-first, stack-agnostic architecture will remain intact.

For teams that run Contentful, nothing breaks overnight. The planning point is broader: any component in a composable stack can change ownership, roadmap priorities or commercial terms. For 2027, that means:

- Contracts and architecture should include an exit path for every major component.
- Integration logic should not be spread across many custom connectors that each depend on one vendor's API shape.
- The layer closest to the customer, the storefront, should be the most portable one.

Teams that use Contentful as their content backend and want a visual editing layer above it can look at a [visual frontend and editor for Contentful](https://www.laioutr.com/en/page-builder-contentful). The difference is one of role: Contentful stores and delivers structured content, while a Frontend Management Platform composes that content with commerce data into pages that marketing teams can edit visually.

## Shift 4: Budgets grow, but not for everyone

IT spending is rising sharply, yet the growth is concentrated. In its [July 2026 forecast](https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2026-07-27-gartner-forecasts-worldwide-it-spending-to-grow-14-point-2-percent-in-2026-totaling-6-point-37-trillion), Gartner expects worldwide IT spending to grow 14.2 percent in 2026 to 6.37 trillion US dollars. Data center systems and infrastructure services lead that growth, driven by AI, while IT services are expected to grow only 5.3 percent. Gartner itself notes that this is not a rising tide that lifts all segments.

At the same time, the [MACH Alliance Enterprise Technology Report](https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20260218812462/en/MACH-Alliance-Research-6X-More-Organizations-Achieve-AI-ROI-With-a-Composable-Foundation) from February 2026, based on a survey of 600 enterprise technology decision-makers, found that 78 percent of organizations with fully implemented MACH technology report clear AI ROI, compared with 13 percent of those in early planning stages. The survey comes from an industry association that promotes composable architecture, so it should be read as a directional signal rather than a neutral benchmark.

Together, the two sources describe the 2027 budget reality: composable projects are most likely to get funded when they are framed as the foundation for AI use cases, not as a standalone modernization.

## 2026 assumptions versus 2027 planning

| Topic | Common assumption in 2026 | Planning view for 2027 |
| --- | --- | --- |
| AI shopping agents | Agents will take over checkout | Agents need structured data and brand experiences supplied by the merchant |
| Frontend | Last phase of the project | Contested layer that decides data, brand and channel control |
| Vendor landscape | Independent best-of-breed vendors | Ongoing consolidation; portability becomes a requirement |
| Budget | Modernization as its own business case | Funding tied to AI readiness and measurable outcomes |
| Ownership | Engineering owns the stack | Marketing and product teams need direct control over pages and content |

## What product and marketing owners can plan now

1. **Audit product data for agent readiness.** Check whether attributes, availability, prices and variants are structured and consistent across storefront and feeds. Agents expose gaps faster than human shoppers.
2. **Define who controls the experience layer.** Write down which system owns page composition, which team can publish and how changes reach AI channels.
3. **Plan portability per component.** For CMS, commerce engine, search and frontend, document what a replacement would involve. Consolidation makes this a risk topic, not a theoretical one.
4. **Tie composable budgets to AI outcomes.** Frame frontend and integration work as the precondition for discoverability in AI search, personalization and faster campaign cycles.
5. **Ship in increments.** Smaller frontend-first steps are easier to fund in a year when most new money goes to AI infrastructure.

## FAQ

### Is composable commerce still relevant in 2027?

Yes, but the reason has shifted. In 2027, modular architecture is less about replacing a monolith and more about being able to supply AI channels, swap vendors and keep control over the customer-facing layer.

### Do AI shopping agents make the storefront less important?

The developments of 2026 point the other way. After OpenAI moved away from its first in-chat checkout, retailers are expected to bring their own experiences into agent channels. That requires a well-structured storefront and data layer.

### What does vendor consolidation mean for existing composable stacks?

Existing integrations keep working in the short term. Over time, roadmaps and commercial terms can change. A portable frontend layer and documented exit paths reduce the impact of such changes.

### How should composable projects be budgeted in 2027?

As enablers for measurable outcomes such as AI discoverability, campaign speed and conversion, delivered in smaller increments rather than as one large replatforming project.

## How Laioutr fits into the 2027 picture

Laioutr is a Frontend Management Platform that sits on top of existing commerce and content backends. Orchestr connects 50+ backends and normalizes their data for the storefront, Studio lets marketing teams build and change pages visually, and the [Composable Digital Experience Platform](https://www.laioutr.com/en/composable-digital-experience-platform) approach keeps the customer-facing layer portable when vendors in the stack change. For machine readability, [SEO and GEO](https://www.laioutr.com/en/product/seo-and-geo) covers structured data and AI search visibility. AI agents in Laioutr are in development and follow a clear principle: agents suggest, a human publishes.
