Edge hosting keeps a storefront fast under load when most requests never reach the origin: pages and assets are cached in edge locations close to shoppers, dynamic parts are rendered at the edge or loaded separately, and invalidation is targeted instead of global. Whether a sale day goes smoothly is decided less by raw server capacity than by the cache hit ratio at the moment the campaign email lands.

## What edge hosting means here, and what it does not

The term "edge delivery" is overloaded. Adobe uses [Edge Delivery Services](https://www.aem.live/) as the name of a specific product within Adobe Experience Manager, including its own authoring model. This article is not about that product. It covers the generic architecture pattern: a storefront frontend that is deployed to a globally distributed network, where HTML, assets and media are cached and, where needed, rendered close to the user.

In a composable setup, the commerce backend, CMS and search stay where they are. The frontend layer sits in front of them and decides what is served from cache, what is rendered per request and what is fetched in the browser. That layer is where peak-load behavior is designed.

## Why storefronts slow down at peak

The problem is rarely the edge network itself. It is the path back to the origin.

- **Cache miss storms:** a short TTL expires on a popular category page, thousands of requests arrive in the same second and all of them go to the origin to render the same page.
- **Personalization that breaks caching:** a single cookie or a currency header in the cache key turns one cacheable page into thousands of variants, each with a near-zero hit ratio.
- **Purge everything:** a price update or a new banner triggers a full cache purge, and the origin has to rebuild the entire catalog at the busiest moment of the day.
- **Heavy media on the critical path:** unoptimized hero images and autoplay videos compete with HTML for bandwidth and push the Largest Contentful Paint beyond acceptable thresholds.
- **Backend calls in the render path:** every server-side render waits for stock, price and promotion APIs, so backend latency becomes frontend latency.

Teams that plan for peak events, such as the ones described in [the Black Friday frontend readiness window](https://www.laioutr.com/en/blog/black-friday-2026-frontend-readiness-window-closing), usually find that fixing these five points matters more than adding origin capacity.

## Cache rules per page type

A single global caching rule does not fit a storefront. Each page type has a different freshness requirement and a different share of peak traffic. The table below is a practical starting point.

| Page type | Cacheable at the edge | Typical freshness approach | Invalidation trigger |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Home and campaign landing pages | Yes, fully | Short TTL plus stale-while-revalidate | CMS publish event |
| Category and listing pages | Yes, fully | Medium TTL, revalidate in background | Catalog or merchandising change |
| Product detail pages | Yes, the shell | Long TTL for content, price and stock loaded separately | Product update event |
| Search results | Partly, popular queries | Short TTL per normalized query | Index update |
| Cart, checkout, account | No | Rendered per request or in the browser | Not applicable |
| Static assets (JS, CSS, fonts) | Yes, immutable | Versioned file names, very long TTL | New deployment |

The key design decision is the cache key. It should contain only what really changes the response: path, locale, currency and possibly a customer group. Session cookies, tracking parameters and marketing query strings belong outside the key, otherwise the hit ratio collapses exactly when traffic grows.

## SSR at the edge: render once, serve many times

Server-side rendering at the edge combines two goals: complete HTML for search engines and AI crawlers, and short response times for shoppers. Under peak load, the decisive question is how often a page is actually rendered.

Three patterns help:

1. **Stale-while-revalidate:** the HTTP extension defined in [RFC 5861](https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc5861) allows a cache to serve a slightly outdated response while it fetches a fresh one in the background. Shoppers never wait for the render, and the origin sees one request instead of thousands.
2. **Request coalescing:** when many requests for the same uncached URL arrive at once, the edge forwards a single request to the origin and serves all waiting clients from that response.
3. **Splitting static and dynamic parts:** the page shell, product content and navigation are cached; price, stock, cart count and personalized recommendations are loaded as small, separate requests. A product detail page then stays cacheable even when prices differ by customer group.

The general semantics of shared caches, including `s-maxage` and the rules for what a cache may store, are standardized in [RFC 9111 on HTTP caching](https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc9111). A header such as `Cache-Control: public, s-maxage=300, stale-while-revalidate=600` is often enough to take a listing page off the origin's critical path.

## Cache invalidation without purge-all

Long TTLs only work when content can be invalidated precisely. Purging the whole cache after every change throws away the protection the edge provides.

- **Tag-based purging:** many CDNs support attaching tags (often called surrogate keys or cache tags) to responses. A product update then purges only the pages that contain this product: its detail page, the categories it appears in and relevant search results.
- **Event-driven invalidation:** the trigger comes from the system that owns the data. A CMS publish, a price import or a stock threshold sends an event, and the frontend layer translates it into the matching purge.
- **Soft purge:** instead of deleting entries, they are marked as stale. Combined with stale-while-revalidate, the next request still gets an immediate answer while a fresh version is built.

A practical rule for peak days: avoid bulk catalog imports and full purges during the campaign window. Price changes that must go live are pushed as targeted invalidations.

## Taking media off the critical path

Images and videos are usually the largest bytes on a storefront page. Under load, they decide whether the LCP stays within the "good" range that Google describes for [Largest Contentful Paint](https://web.dev/articles/lcp).

An [image CDN for storefronts](https://www.laioutr.com/en/cloud/image-cdn) compresses images automatically, converts them to modern formats such as WebP and AVIF and delivers the right size per device via URL parameters. A [video CDN with adaptive streaming](https://www.laioutr.com/en/cloud/video-cdn) transcodes uploads into several resolutions and streams them via HLS, so a campaign video does not block the page or overload the origin. A broader overview of how [CDNs support composable commerce at global scale](https://www.laioutr.com/en/blog/cdn-digital-experiences) puts these building blocks in context.

## Peak-readiness checklist for dev teams

Before a major campaign, these checks are worth running in a staging environment that mirrors production caching:

1. **Load test with realistic cache behavior:** test both a warm cache and a cold cache.
2. **Measure the cache hit ratio per page type:** listing and campaign pages should be served almost entirely from the edge. A low ratio usually points to cache key problems.
3. **Track TTFB per region at the 75th percentile:** web.dev describes [a TTFB of 0.8 seconds or less as good](https://web.dev/articles/ttfb).
4. **Prewarm critical URLs:** campaign landing pages and top categories are requested once per region before the launch.
5. **Protect the origin:** rate limiting, bot filtering and a web application firewall stop scrapers and abusive traffic from consuming capacity meant for shoppers.
6. **Define a rollback path:** a broken release during peak traffic must be reversible in seconds, not after a new build.

## How Laioutr handles edge delivery for storefronts

Laioutr runs the storefront frontend as part of its Frontend Management Platform. [Laioutr Edge Hosting](https://www.laioutr.com/en/cloud/edge-hosting) serves it from more than 100 edge locations with a 99.99 % uptime SLA and a Time to First Byte under 50 ms. Static delivery, edge caching and edge rendering are combined, autoscaling absorbs traffic spikes without capacity planning, and SSL, DDoS protection and a web application firewall are included.

This fits the operating model described under [Frontend as a Service](https://www.laioutr.com/en/frontend-as-a-service): the frontend, its delivery and its media pipeline are run as one managed layer, while the commerce backend stays unchanged. On the performance side, Laioutr storefronts reach a median LCP of 1.2 s, and the targets for [Core Web Vitals performance](https://www.laioutr.com/en/product/performance-core-web-vitals) are LCP under 1.2 s, INP under 80 ms and CLS under 0.02.

## FAQ

### Is edge hosting the same as Adobe Edge Delivery Services?

No. Edge Delivery Services is a product name within Adobe Experience Manager. Edge hosting in this article means the general pattern of serving a storefront frontend from a distributed edge network, independent of the commerce backend or CMS in use.

### Can personalized storefronts still be cached at the edge?

Yes, if personalization is separated from the page shell. The shell and content are cached per locale and possibly per customer group, while personalized elements such as recommendations, prices for logged-in B2B buyers or the cart are loaded as separate requests.

### How short should TTLs be on sale days?

Short TTLs alone increase origin load. A more robust setup combines moderate TTLs with stale-while-revalidate and targeted, event-driven invalidation.

## Conclusion

Peak traffic is a caching problem before it is a capacity problem. Clear cache rules per page type, edge rendering with stale-while-revalidate, targeted invalidation and offloaded media keep the origin calm while shoppers see fast pages. Laioutr provides this as a managed frontend layer with Edge Hosting, Image CDN and Video CDN.
