Hyvä renders Magento pages on the server with PHP templates and layout XML, adds interactivity through small Alpine.js components and styles everything with Tailwind CSS. A component-based Frontend Management Platform such as Laioutr renders a separate Vue/Nuxt application that reads Magento data through APIs and treats every section of a page as a typed component. Both approaches produce fast storefronts; they differ in where HTML is created, where state lives, how components are reused and how teams test them.

This post stays on the technology layer. Business questions such as budget, agency choice or when to decouple at all are covered in the [Hyvä vs. Headless vs. FMP decision guide](https://www.laioutr.com/en/blog/hyva-vs-headless-vs-fmp-magento-frontend-decision-2026). Here the focus is on five engineering dimensions: rendering, reactivity, component model, styling and testing.

## The two stacks at a glance

**Hyvä** is a theme for Magento 2 and Adobe Commerce. It replaces the Luma frontend stack (RequireJS, Knockout.js, jQuery, LESS) with Alpine.js and Tailwind CSS while keeping Magento's own rendering pipeline: `.phtml` templates, blocks, view models and layout XML. Since November 10, 2025, the Hyvä Theme is [free and open source under OSL 3.0 and AFL 3.0](https://www.hyva.io/blog/news/hyva-is-free-open-source.html). Hyvä Checkout and Hyvä Enterprise remain commercial products, and Hyvä UI is sold separately.

**A component-based FMP** runs the storefront as its own application. In Laioutr's case that is a Nuxt app built from Vue single-file components. Magento stays the commerce backend and delivers catalog, cart and customer data through its GraphQL API. Orchestr, Laioutr's unified data layer, normalizes that data so components do not depend on one specific backend schema.

## Rendering: where the HTML comes from

In Hyvä, Magento itself produces the HTML. A request hits Magento, the layout XML decides which blocks appear, each block renders a `.phtml` template, and full page cache or Varnish serves the result. JavaScript is optional enhancement: the page is complete before Alpine starts. This is classic server-side rendering with a very small client runtime, and it explains a large part of Hyvä's good Core Web Vitals.

In a Nuxt-based FMP, the frontend application produces the HTML. The server (or an edge node) runs the Vue components, fetches data through the API layer and streams HTML to the browser. The client then hydrates the same components so they become interactive. Nuxt also allows hybrid rendering per route, for example static generation for content pages and server rendering for product pages.

The practical consequence: in Hyvä, rendering performance is tied to Magento's PHP stack and cache configuration. In a decoupled setup, rendering performance is tied to the frontend runtime and its cache strategy, while Magento only answers API calls.

## Reactivity and state

Alpine.js follows an "islands of interactivity" model. Each `x-data` element is a small, self-contained component with local state. Shared state uses Alpine stores or browser events, and Magento's private content (cart, customer section data) is loaded on the client. This keeps the JavaScript footprint small, but cross-component state has to be designed deliberately.

Hyvä also ships an Alpine CSP build. Because PCI DSS 4.0 requires a strict Content Security Policy on payment pages, the [Hyvä CSP documentation](https://docs.hyva.io/hyva-themes/writing-code/csp/alpine-csp.html) asks developers to register components through `Alpine.data()` and move expressions into methods. Inline expressions such as negations or ternaries in attributes are not allowed in that build.

```
<div x-data="qtyStepper">
  <button type="button" @click="decrement">-</button>
  <span x-text="qty"></span>
  <button type="button" @click="increment">+</button>
</div>
<script>
  function qtyStepper() {
    return { qty: 1, increment() { this.qty++ }, decrement() { if (this.qty > 1) this.qty-- } };
  }
  window.addEventListener('alpine:init', () => Alpine.data('qtyStepper', qtyStepper), { once: true });
</script>
```

In Vue, reactivity is part of the component system. State lives in `ref` and `computed` values, props flow down, events flow up, and shared state sits in composables or a store. Server and client run the same component code, which removes the split between "PHP renders it" and "JavaScript enhances it". The cost is a larger runtime and a hydration step that has to be kept under control.

## Component model and reuse

Hyvä components are Magento building blocks: a block class or view model, a template and a layout XML handle. Reuse happens through Magento's theme fallback and layout overrides. That works well inside one Magento installation, and it lets PHP developers stay productive. Extensions that render frontend UI usually need a Hyvä compatibility module, while purely server side extensions work unchanged.

In Laioutr, a section or block is a Vue component plus a typed definition. The definition declares its fields (text, media, link, select, arrays) and slots. Studio reads that schema to build the editing interface, and the component receives typed props.

```
<script lang="ts">
export const definition = defineSection({
  component: 'SectionPromo',
  studio: { label: 'Promo' },
  slots: [],
  schema: [{ label: 'Content', fields: [{ type: 'text', name: 'heading', label: 'Heading' }] }],
});
</script>
<script setup lang="ts">
const props = defineProps(definitionToProps(definition));
</script>
```

Because the contract between editor and code is explicit, marketing teams can compose pages from 70+ components without touching templates, and developers can change a component once for every brand and locale that uses it.

## Styling: Tailwind in both worlds

Tailwind CSS is the most visible part of Hyvä. Since Hyvä 1.4.0, the theme supports [Tailwind CSS v4](https://docs.hyva.io/hyva-themes/working-with-tailwindcss/updating-to-tailwind-4.html), and the build scans `.phtml` and XML files for class names. The design system therefore lives in the Tailwind configuration and in utility classes inside templates.

A component-based frontend can use Tailwind as well; Vue single-file components work with any CSS approach. The difference is where design decisions are stored. In Laioutr, brand look is defined through themes and design tokens (colors, typography, spacing, radius), so several brands can share one component library. With Hyvä, multi-brand setups typically mean several child themes with their own Tailwind builds.

## Testing and tooling

Hyvä code is tested like Magento code: PHPUnit and Magento integration tests for blocks and view models, plus browser tests (for example Playwright or Cypress) for Alpine behavior. Alpine components are plain JavaScript objects, so logic can be unit tested, but rendering always depends on a running Magento instance.

Vue components can be tested in isolation: unit tests with Vitest and Vue Test Utils, visual states in Storybook, and end-to-end tests against the running app. Because components are typed with TypeScript and fed through a defined data layer, many tests run without a Magento backend at all.

## Side-by-side comparison

| Dimension | Hyvä (Tailwind + Alpine) | Component-based FMP (Vue/Nuxt) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Rendering | Server side in Magento (PHP, layout XML, page cache) | Server side or edge in a Nuxt app, then hydration |
| Reactivity | Alpine islands, local state, stores and events | Vue reactivity, props, composables, stores |
| Component model | Block or view model + template + layout handle | Vue component + typed section or block definition |
| Styling | Tailwind CSS v4 utilities in templates | Any CSS approach, brand look via themes and design tokens |
| Testing | PHPUnit, Magento integration tests, browser tests | Vitest, Storybook, end-to-end tests, often without backend |
| Backend coupling | Magento only, same release cycle | Magento via API, other backends possible |
| Editing | Magento CMS and Page Builder | Visual editor (Studio) on the component schema |

## Which stack fits which team

Hyvä is a strong choice when the storefront stays on Magento for the long term, the team thinks in PHP and Magento layouts, and the extension landscape is covered by compatibility modules. The free license since November 2025 lowers the entry barrier further, and the CSP build gives a clear path for PCI DSS 4.0 on checkout pages. [Hyvä Checkout is built on Magewire](https://www.hyva.io/hyva-checkout.html), which again keeps logic in PHP.

A component-based FMP fits better when the frontend should outlive a specific backend, when several brands or markets share one component library, or when marketing teams need to publish pages without a developer ticket. It also fits teams with Vue or TypeScript experience who want frontend releases independent of Magento upgrades. The [Magento headless frontend](https://www.laioutr.com/en/headless-frontend-for-magento-2) keeps Magento as the backend while the storefront moves to its own runtime.

Neither stack is automatically faster. Hyvä benefits from minimal JavaScript; a Nuxt frontend benefits from edge rendering and caching. Laioutr targets an LCP below 1.2 s, an INP below 80 ms and a CLS below 0.02, measured on the frontend layer described on the [Performance and Core Web Vitals](https://www.laioutr.com/en/product/performance-core-web-vitals) page.

## FAQ

### Does Hyvä use Vue or React?

No. Hyvä uses Alpine.js for interactivity and Tailwind CSS for styling, rendered inside Magento's PHP templates. Since Hyvä 1.2.0 the theme runs on Alpine.js v3.

### Is Hyvä still a paid theme?

The Hyvä Theme has been free and open source under OSL 3.0 and AFL 3.0 since November 10, 2025. Hyvä Checkout, Hyvä Enterprise and Hyvä UI remain commercial products.

### Can a component-based frontend reuse Tailwind classes from a Hyvä project?

Partly. Tailwind configuration and design decisions can be carried over, but templates have to be rebuilt as Vue components because the rendering model changes from PHP templates to an application.

### Do both approaches work with Magento extensions?

Hyvä needs compatibility modules for extensions that render frontend UI. A decoupled frontend uses the data that extensions expose through Magento's APIs and rebuilds the UI as components.

## Conclusion

Tailwind plus Alpine and a component-based Vue/Nuxt frontend solve the same problem from opposite ends: one modernizes Magento's own rendering, the other moves rendering into a dedicated application with a typed component contract. For teams that need the second option, Laioutr's [Composable Headless Frontend](https://www.laioutr.com/en/composable-headless-frontend) connects Magento through APIs and lets Studio work directly on the component schema. Background on the license change is available in the post on [what Hyvä's open source license means for frontend strategy](https://www.laioutr.com/en/blog/hyva-open-source-free-themes-frontend-strategy-2026).
