What does headless mean for Adobe Commerce?

Headless for Adobe Commerce separates the frontend, everything your customers see, from the Adobe Commerce backend with products, Company Accounts, Quote Management, and Approval Workflows. Instead of the default storefront, the frontend connects via the Adobe Commerce GraphQL API and can be designed freely, without theme limits and with full performance control.

1. The backend stays Adobe Commerce

Adobe Commerce still manages products, Company Accounts, Negotiable Quotes, Approval Workflows, Shared Catalogs, Tiered Pricing, stores, and checkout. You keep using the Adobe Commerce admin unchanged, with all B2B modules and Adobe Sensei features.

2. The frontend is chosen

You have four established options: Hyvä Themes (performance without headless), PWA Studio (Adobe's official headless), Custom Build (Next.js or Nuxt), or a Frontend Management Platform like Laioutr.

3. Data flows via GraphQL in real time

No data duplication, no sync conflicts. Laioutr talks directly to the Adobe Commerce GraphQL API, including all B2B endpoints for Company Accounts, Quotes, and Approvals.

Benefits

Which frontend options do you have for Adobe Commerce?

Adobe Commerce has the same frontend landscape as Magento Open Source, but with enterprise consequences. Four options are established in the market. Here's where each one pays off for Adobe Commerce buyers.

1. Hyvä Themes

A performance theme alternative to the default storefront, Twig-based, not headless. Also works with Adobe Commerce, but you lose the Adobe stack advantage. Makes sense when you use Adobe Commerce primarily for its B2B features but don't need the Adobe Suite stack.

2. PWA Studio

Adobe's official headless product, React-based, with the deepest Adobe stack integration through Adobe Sensei and AEM. Makes sense when you want to stay strategically in the Adobe stack and have a React team plus a six- to twelve-month engineering budget.

3. Custom Build (Next.js or Nuxt)

Maximum control, highest effort. A six- to twelve-month build phase plus ongoing maintenance. Makes sense for enterprise teams with dedicated frontend engineering and highly specific B2B requirements.

4. Laioutr DXP

Frontend Management Platform with a visual builder, 70+ components including B2B building blocks, EU hosting, and multi-backend support. Makes sense when you want to go live fast, need standard B2B features out of the box, and want to keep your Adobe stack optionality open.

USE CASES

What you build with Laioutr for Adobe Commerce

Laioutr is built for Adobe Commerce setups that want to scale B2B workflows without being tied to the Adobe stack. From the Company Account portal to the multi-brand storefront.

B2B portals with Company Accounts, Negotiable Quotes, and Shared Catalogs

Adobe Commerce B2B delivers the complete workflows. Laioutr calls the GraphQL API directly and renders customer-group-specific frontends with approval flows, quote negotiation, and customer-specific assortments.

Multi-brand storefronts on one Adobe Commerce Cloud instance

Multiple brands on one Cloud instance, with their own frontends, their own domains, a shared backend, and a shared B2B configuration.

International multi-store setups with localized B2B workflows

Adobe Commerce Stores, Store Views, and Websites per market, with localized B2B workflows like Tax IDs, quote templates, and approval hierarchies.

Replatforming from the default theme or PWA Studio to Laioutr

An existing frontend stack (default or PWA Studio) is to be replaced without touching the Adobe Commerce backend. Phased migration.

Greenfield storefronts on new Adobe Commerce projects

New Adobe Commerce project, fresh start. With Laioutr themes and the UI library, you're in production in weeks instead of investing six months in a PWA Studio custom build.

Replatforming support when moving from Adobe Commerce to other backends

You're planning a move away from Adobe Commerce down the line, say to commercetools or Shopware. Laioutr supports this move without having to rebuild the frontend.

Laioutr vs. Adobe PWA Studio

The honest enterprise comparison

PWA Studio is Adobe's official headless product for Adobe Commerce, React-based, deeply integrated into the Adobe stack, with a direct Adobe roadmap and connections to Adobe Sensei and AEM. Laioutr is a complete Frontend Management Platform with a visual builder, a component library, and multi-backend support. Both work with Adobe Commerce. Those who want to stay in the Adobe stack get the most native solution with PWA Studio. Those who consider multi-backend optionality strategically important or want to launch faster are more productive with Laioutr.

MAGENTO 2

When PWA Studio is the right choice

You've committed strategically and permanently to Adobe Experience Cloud, you actively use Adobe Sensei, AEM, Adobe Analytics, and Adobe Target, you have a React team with Adobe stack experience, and Adobe Suite lock-in is strategically fine for you. Classic use case: an enterprise Adobe customer with an existing Adobe Suite strategy and a six- to seven-figure engineering budget.

LAIOUTR

When Laioutr is the right choice

You want weeks instead of months to go-live, you want to keep your backend options open (maybe commercetools or Shopware down the line), standard B2B features should be available out of the box, marketing should build pages independently, you need BFSG compliance without a separate audit. Classic use case: an Adobe Commerce customer who values the B2B features but doesn't want to commit to the full Adobe Suite stack.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about headless for Adobe Commerce

Yes. Laioutr uses the Adobe Commerce GraphQL API, which is identical in Cloud and on-premise. Multi-tenant setups, multi-store, and multi-website are natively supported.

PWA Studio is Adobe's official React framework for headless Adobe Commerce, code-first and deeply integrated into the Adobe stack. Laioutr is a ready-made frontend platform with a visual builder, 70+ components, and integrated hosting. Live faster, lower learning curve, and you're not tied to the Adobe stack.

Yes. Adobe Commerce B2B features (Company Accounts, Negotiable Quotes, Approval Workflows, Shared Catalogs, Tiered Pricing) are served via the GraphQL API and rendered in Laioutr B2B components.

Adobe Sensei AI features that run in the Adobe Commerce backend (personalization, search, recommendations) are served via the API and can be used in Laioutr components. Frontend Sensei features like Adobe Target, however, require deeper Adobe stack integration, which is more native with PWA Studio.

Adobe Experience Manager can be connected as a CMS source for content, for example for brand pages or editorial sections. Deeper AEM integration (author workflow, AEM Sites) is more native with PWA Studio.

Yes. Adobe Analytics is embedded via JavaScript tags, exactly as with any other frontend solution. Adobe Target works as a third-party system, with a personalization layer in the frontend.

For a medium setup with clear branding and no exotic custom logic: 8 to 14 weeks from kickoff to go-live. With complex B2B workflows or multi-store, correspondingly more.

PWA Studio itself is free (open source, Apache 2.0), but the engineering investment is considerable (a six- to twelve-month build phase plus ongoing maintenance). Laioutr is SaaS with transparent plans; hosting and components are included. The total cost of ownership is typically well below PWA Studio.

Yes. That's precisely one of the key advantages over PWA Studio. Laioutr is backend-agnostic; switching from Adobe Commerce to commercetools, Shopware, Shopify, or another backend means reconfiguring an API connection, not rebuilding the frontend.

Yes. EU/Germany server location, EU standard contractual clauses, German-language support, WCAG 3.0, and the BFSG (German Accessibility Reinforcement Act, binding since 2025) are covered by default.

Yes, we are an official Adobe Commerce Technology Partner.
