Headless for Magento separates the frontend, everything your customers see, from the Magento backend with products, orders, checkout, and stores. Instead of the default Luma storefront, the frontend connects via the Magento REST API or GraphQL and can be designed freely, without theme limits and with full performance control.
Magento 2 or Adobe Commerce still manages products, categories, stores, customer groups, orders, taxes, and checkout. You keep using the Magento admin unchanged, with all extensions and workflows.
You have four established options: Hyvä Themes (performance without headless), PWA Studio (Adobe's official headless), Custom Build (Next.js or Nuxt), or a Frontend Management Platform like Laioutr. Each has its place.
No data duplication, no sync conflicts. Laioutr talks directly to the Magento REST API and GraphQL, including multi-store, customer-group, and Adobe Commerce B2B support.
Magento has the richest frontend landscape of all the major e-commerce platforms. Four options are established in the market, each with clear strengths and weaknesses. Here's where each one pays off.
A performance theme alternative to Luma, significantly faster than the default theme, Twig-based, not headless. Very popular in the DACH Magento ecosystem. Makes sense when you want to solve the performance problems of the Luma storefront without making the jump to a headless architecture. If Hyvä meets your requirements, you don't need Laioutr.
Adobe's official headless product for Magento and Adobe Commerce, React-based, deeply integrated into the Adobe stack. Makes sense for mature React teams with an Adobe strategy and a six-figure engineering budget. PWA Studio is code-first and requires standalone maintenance.
Maximum control, highest effort. A six- to twelve-month build phase, ongoing maintenance by an in-house React or Vue team. Makes sense when frontend engineering is your strategic core competency.
Frontend Management Platform with a visual builder, 70+ components, EU hosting, and multi-backend support. Fastest time-to-launch, lowest learning curve, backend optionality for the future. Makes sense when you want to go live fast, need marketing velocity, and don't want to be locked into Adobe.
Laioutr is built for Magento setups that need to change or modernize fast. From the multi-store setup to the PWA Studio migration.
Magento Multi-Store with Stores, Store Views, and Websites. Its own layout, its own assortments, its own languages per store, with a unified backend.
Adobe Commerce B2B delivers Company Accounts, Quote Management, Negotiable Quotes, Approval Workflows. Laioutr renders these workflows in dedicated B2B components.
The Luma storefront is replaced, the Magento backend stays unchanged. Phased migration, with a clear rollback plan.
An existing PWA Studio stack is to be replaced because the React team has been thinned out or maintenance costs are rising. Laioutr takes over with a low learning curve.
New Magento project, fresh start. With Laioutr themes and the UI library, you're in production in weeks.
Multiple brands on one Adobe Commerce instance with standalone frontends, their own domains, and a shared backend.
PWA Studio is Adobe's official headless product for Magento and Adobe Commerce, React-based, deeply integrated into the Adobe stack, and developed by Adobe itself. Laioutr is a complete Frontend Management Platform with a visual builder, a component library, and multi-backend support. Both work with Magento. Those who want to launch fast and work cross-functionally are more productive with Laioutr. Those who want to stay in the Adobe stack get the most native solution with PWA Studio.

All data is based on publicly available information, insights from sales conversations with DACH e-commerce brands, and our own platform testing. As of April 2026. Magento features may have evolved since then.
You've committed strategically and permanently to Adobe Commerce, you have a React team with Adobe stack experience, you use Adobe Experience Manager or other Adobe products. Classic use case: an enterprise Adobe customer with an existing Adobe Suite strategy.
You want weeks instead of months to go-live, you want to keep your backend options open (maybe Shopify or commercetools down the line), marketing should build pages independently, you need BFSG compliance without a separate audit. Classic use case: a mid-market Magento shop that wants to modernize without locking into Adobe.
