What does headless mean for SAP Commerce Cloud?

Headless for SAP Commerce Cloud separates the frontend, everything your customers see, from the SAP Commerce backend with its products, catalogs, orders, and checkout. The frontend connects through the OCC API (Omni Commerce Connect, REST) and can be designed freely, without the constraints of the Accelerator storefront and with full performance control.

1. The backend stays SAP Commerce Cloud

SAP Commerce Cloud continues to manage products, catalogs, customer hierarchies, orders, taxes, and checkout. You keep using Backoffice, ImpEx, and the familiar business tools unchanged, with all your established workflows and extensions.

2. The frontend is chosen

You have four options: keep the Accelerator storefront, go with the Composable Storefront (Spartacus), custom-build (Next.js or Nuxt), or use a Frontend Management Platform like Laioutr. Each option has its pros and cons.

3. Data flows in real time via the OCC API

No duplicated data, no sync conflicts. Laioutr talks directly to the OCC REST API, including support for multi-site, customer groups, and B2B commerce.

Benefits

What frontend options do you have for SAP Commerce Cloud?

Unlike backends without an official frontend, SAP ships its own headless product with the Composable Storefront (Spartacus). That turns the frontend question into a strategic decision for every SAP Commerce project: keep the Accelerator running, go with Spartacus, build your own, or use a Frontend Management Platform. Four options are established in the market.

1. Accelerator storefront (legacy)

The classic, server-side storefront from the SAP Commerce Accelerator, built on JSP and Spring MVC. Solid for established setups, but the performance ceiling and frontend limitations are becoming increasingly noticeable, and SAP positions the Composable Storefront as its successor. A sensible transitional solution, not a path to the future.

2. Composable Storefront (Spartacus)

SAP's official, Angular-based headless frontend that communicates exclusively via the OCC API. Backed by SAP support since version 5.0 rather than being pure open source. Solid and vendor-backed, but Angular expertise, modular library maintenance, and ongoing upgrade cycles sit with your team. A good fit if you have an Angular team and an appetite for running it yourself.

3. Custom Build (Next.js or Nuxt)

Maximum control, highest effort. A six- to twelve-month build phase and permanent maintenance by an in-house Java and React or Vue team. A good fit when frontend engineering is your strategic core competency.

4. Laioutr DXP

A Frontend Management Platform with a visual builder, 70+ components, EU hosting, and multi-backend support. Fastest time-to-launch, lowest learning curve, backend optionality for the future. It makes sense if you want to go live fast, without a custom-build investment.

USE CASES

What you can build with Laioutr for SAP Commerce Cloud

Laioutr is built for SAP Commerce setups that need to change fast and scale globally. From a multi-site storefront for brand portfolios to a B2B configurator frontend with complex catalogs.

Multi-site storefronts on one SAP Commerce backend

Multiple base sites (brands, markets, sales channels) on a single instance with standalone frontends, their own domains, and their own brand identity. One pool of components, many brand experiences.

B2B portals with SAP Commerce customer hierarchies

SAP Commerce delivers B2B commerce with organizations, customer hierarchies, and approval workflows. Laioutr calls the OCC API directly and renders customer-group-specific prices, assortments, and approval processes.

Configurator-driven PDPs

Industrial goods, customization workflows, B2B specifications, and CPQ scenarios. Complex state-management logic is solved at the Laioutr component level, while OCC API calls stay cleanly separated.

International storefronts with their own site per market

One SAP Commerce instance, many base sites. Languages, currencies, layouts, and assortments can be controlled per site, compatible with the SAP Commerce multi-site concept.

Replatforming from the Accelerator to headless without touching the backend

An existing SAP Commerce stack needs a frontend overhaul without touching the backend configuration. Migration in phases, with a clear rollback plan.

Greenfield storefronts on new SAP Commerce projects

A new SAP Commerce project, a fresh start. With Laioutr themes and the UI library, you go live in weeks instead of investing months in a custom build.

Laioutr vs. custom build for SAP Commerce Cloud

The honest comparison

SAP Commerce Cloud comes with an official headless frontend in the Composable Storefront (Spartacus), but it demands Angular expertise and ongoing in-house operation. For custom requirements, the most common frontend decision therefore comes down to: a custom build in Next.js or Nuxt, or a Frontend Management Platform like Laioutr. A custom build gives maximum control but costs a six- to twelve-month build phase and permanent maintenance. Laioutr delivers Studio, 70+ components, and hosting in the plan, with full code extensibility for edge cases. Both work with SAP Commerce Cloud B2B and B2C.

SAP Commerce Cloud

When a custom build is the right choice

You have a dedicated React or Vue team with Java and SAP Commerce experience, at least three engineers. You're building exactly one SAP Commerce storefront with extremely specialized requirements. Frontend engineering is your strategic core competency. Classic use case: an enterprise brand with its own engineering team and a demand for pixel-level control.

LAIOUTR

When Laioutr is the right choice

You want weeks instead of months to go-live, you want marketing to build pages on its own, you serve multiple SAP Commerce sites or brands, you want to keep backend optionality open, and BFSG and WCAG 3.0 must be handled without a separate audit. Classic use case: a mid-market or enterprise SAP Commerce shop that wants to scale without a double-digit engineering investment.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about headless for SAP Commerce Cloud

Yes. Laioutr uses the OCC API (Omni Commerce Connect, REST), which is available for both B2C and B2B commerce scenarios. B2B features such as organizations, customer hierarchies, approval workflows, and quote management are also supported, provided the corresponding API endpoints are enabled.

A custom build typically costs a six- to twelve-month engineering investment plus ongoing maintenance by an internal React or Vue team. Laioutr delivers Studio, 70+ components, and hosting in the plan. Time-to-launch drops from months to weeks, and the total cost of ownership is typically well below.

The Composable Storefront is SAP's Angular-based frontend that you set up, customize, and maintain across ongoing upgrade cycles yourself. Laioutr delivers a visual builder, ready-made components, themes, and EU hosting in the plan, so marketing and content teams become productive too, without building up Angular engineering.

Laioutr connects via SAP Commerce Cloud's official OCC REST endpoints. We support the standard operations for product search, cart, checkout, and account management, plus custom endpoints for project-specific logic.

Yes. SAP Commerce base sites are treated as standalone storefronts in Laioutr. Layouts, assortments, languages, and currencies can be configured separately per site.

Yes. SAP Commerce B2B features (organizations, customer hierarchies, approval workflows) are exposed via the OCC API and rendered in Laioutr components. Specific B2B workflows can be extended with custom components.

SAP positions the Composable Storefront as the Accelerator's successor. That changes nothing about the Laioutr integration: we use the official OCC API, which stays stable regardless of the frontend you choose. You benefit from Laioutr's backend agnosticism, the frontend stays in place even if your SAP roadmap changes.

For a mid-sized setup with clear branding and no exotic custom logic: 8 to 14 weeks from kickoff to go-live. With multi-site or complex B2B setups, correspondingly more.

We work with transparent SaaS plans based on traffic and required features. The total cost of ownership is typically below a custom build, because hosting, components, and editor are included in the license and no separate frontend engineering team is needed.

Yes. Laioutr is backend-agnostic. Moving from SAP Commerce Cloud to Shopify, Shopware, commercetools, or another backend means reconfiguring an API connection, not rebuilding the frontend.

Yes. Server location EU/Germany, EU standard contractual clauses, German-language support, WCAG 3.0, and BFSG (the German Accessibility Reinforcement Act, binding since 2025) are covered as standard. Compliance is built in, not bolted on.

Backend extensions (inventory, pricing, promotions, shipping) stay unchanged. Frontend-oriented features (pop-ups, reviews, personalization) are typically replaced by Laioutr components or pre-integrated apps from our App Store. We review your stack in the migration audit.

SAP Commerce Cloud (formerly Hybris) offers several frontend routes: the classic Accelerator (JSP, server-side, legacy), Spartacus or the Composable Storefront (SAP's Angular-based headless frontend), a custom build against the Commerce Web Services API, or a ready-made Frontend Management Platform like Laioutr with a visual builder, 70+ components, and EU hosting. More on the concept: composable headless frontend.
