An AI Copilot for Editors Looks Nothing Like One for Devs

Contentful launched "Skills" , an AI agent that understands the Contentful CMS from a developer perspective. Built well, communicated cleanly. For the developer persona, it's progress.

My take is this: 80% of daily editing inside the CMS/FMP stack doesn't happen in developer IDE chats. It happens with marketing editors, brand owners, and merchandising leads inside the visual editor. If the industry is building AI copilots and means the developer surface , what's the answer for the editor surface?

That's a UX question, not a tech question. Three patterns that separate an editor copilot from a developer coding agent.

1. In-context, not in-chat

Developer copilots live in a chat window or an IDE sidebar. That works for developers because they already switch between code, terminal, and chat surfaces. An editor works differently. An editor works at the block, the hero, the product module. Hand on the mouse, focus inside the drag-and-drop flow. A chat window forces a mental context switch and breaks that flow.

Editor copilot pattern: sit on the element, not in the sidebar.

Concrete examples from our editor-operations practice:

  • "Translate this hero into French" as a right-click action on the hero block. No chat prompt, no separate translation view. The copilot renders the French variant inline in the locale switcher.
  • "Suggest a variant for this headline" as an inline suggestion pill directly in the headline text field. Suggestions appear under the field, with accept/reject per variant.
  • "Generate a brand-compliant alt description for this image" as a hover action on the image block. Output lands directly in the alt-text field.

The technical argument behind it (Sebastian sub-voice): when the copilot sits at section/block level, it has access to the full context of the editor action , which section, which locale, which content model. A chat prompt would have to reconstruct all of that. Inline actions aren't just UX comfort, they're technically more deterministic.

2. Brand-constraint awareness, not general generation

Developer copilots know what the tech-stack conventions are , linting rules, code style, test patterns. They run their suggestions against those conventions before showing them to the developer.

An editor copilot needs the equivalent: brand-constraint awareness. What can a text suggestion be, what can't it? Which tone applies for this brand, this locale, this section? Which adjectives are off-limits? Which brand tokens visualize this correctly?

Pattern: the editor copilot loads the brand-voice profile and the visual brand system as a constraint layer. Suggestions run against those constraints before they reach the editor.

Concrete UX form:

  • Inline hint, not blocking modal. "This headline variant uses 'revolutionary' , brand voice avoids that adjective. Want an alternative?" , as a soft tooltip, not a hard reject.
  • Brand-token suggestions. When the editor picks a background color, the copilot suggests the closest brand color: "#702CCE (Brand Purple) is closer to brand consistency than the current pick."
  • Constraint visibility. A small indicator icon on the block shows whether all current editor content is compatible with brand constraints. Green = OK, yellow = hint, red = brand break.

That's not "less AI" , it's differently calibrated AI. The copilot stays suggestion-strong, but suggestions stay inside the brand corridor.

3. Outcome metric, not velocity metric

A developer coding agent is measured by how many pull requests run per hour. Velocity is the metric. Faster code, more code, fewer code-review loops.

An editor copilot can't be measured that way. "More headlines per hour" isn't a success metric, it's an output-inflation metric. The real question is: does the AI suggestion lift conversion? Did the A/B variant win? Did brand-constraint awareness improve brand consistency (measurable, for example, through internal brand audits)?

Three UX patterns that bring this into the editor flow:

  • Outcome confirmation toast after A/B activation. When an editor sets an AI-suggested variant live as an A/B test, a toast appears 14 days later: "This variant lifted conversion by 12% in a 14-day window. Want to make it permanent?"
  • Accept/reject with outcome anchor. Instead of logging only "accept" or "reject," the copilot asks after 7 days: "Did this headline hold up?" The editor decides , and the copilot learns which suggestions actually paid off.
  • Default setting: suggest, don't auto-apply. Editor copilots should not auto-publish by default. They should suggest, document, and leave the call to the editor. Developer workflows have auto-commit defaults , editor workflows need approval defaults.

What Contentful Skills doesn't solve (for this persona)

Contentful Skills is well-built. But it's a tool for a persona comfortable with IDE chat surfaces. A marketing editor building a landing page for the Q3 campaign today is not that persona. She needs inline suggestions, brand-constraint awareness, and outcome feedback , at the block, in the editor, without a chat sidebar.

Cross-persona differentiation is an argument, not a competitive frame. Contentful understands developers very well. The open question is: who builds the editor surface with the same depth? That's the gap FMPs address.

Three next steps for heads of UX, product owners, and merchandising leads who want to test this in their own stack selection:

  1. Editor flow test: have an editor build a real landing page live. How often does she switch between the editor and an external AI surface? Every switch is a UX risk.
  2. Brand constraint check: does the editor today have visibility on brand-voice violations before publish? Or only in the brand audit two weeks later?
  3. Outcome loop check: how long does it take from "this headline is live" to "this headline held up"? If the answer is "never visible in the editor," there's a missing loop.

The bigger UX shift in 2026 doesn't sit in the developer chat. It sits in the visual editor , at the block, inside the brand corridor, with outcome feedback.
