Frontend Budget 2027: Why the Experience Layer Deserves Its Own Line Item

June is budget season. Somewhere in your organization, someone is building a spreadsheet with rows for platform license, hosting, development retainer, and support contract. And somewhere in that spreadsheet, the frontend shows up as a sub-item under "platform costs" or "development," with no dedicated line, no dedicated owner, and no dedicated prioritization logic.

The hidden frontend budget

Most e-commerce budgets are organized around the backend. Platform license (Shopware, Salesforce, commercetools), integration layer, middleware, OMS, PIM. The frontend is then treated as a derivative output: development time for theming, a design retainer, maybe a performance audit once a year.

What gets lost in that framing is the question of iteration speed. How often can your marketing team launch a new landing page without filing a developer ticket? How quickly do you respond to a seasonal peak event with new content and layouts? How many A/B tests are running in parallel on your storefront at any given time?
