"Headless frontend" describes an architecture in which the storefront is decoupled from the commerce backend and connected via APIs. This separation gives you maximum freedom and that very freedom is the source of the problem many teams have had ever since. What is a headless frontend?

A headless frontend is the customer-facing storefront layer of a commerce stack, decoupled from the backend (product, order, and customer data).

 

Frontend and backend talk to each other through open APIs, typically REST or GraphQL.

Unlike monolithic commerce platforms (Shopware 5, Magento 1, classic Shopify), the frontend here isn't a theme layer "inside" the backend, but a standalone application with its own stack, its own maintenance, its own lifecycle.

The two terms are often used interchangeably. But they aren't the same. Here's the clean distinction. Both terms belong together, but describe two different layers of the same stack.

TERM 1

Headless Commerce

Refers to the architecture decision in the commerce backend. The backend delivers its capabilities (products, pricing, orders, checkout) exclusively via APIs without its own frontend layer. Examples: commercetools, Shopify Storefront API, Shopware Headless.

Headless Frontend

Refers to the storefront layer needed in a headless commerce setup. The frontend is a standalone application that talks to the backend via APIs. Examples: Hydrogen, Vue Storefront, a custom Next.js setup, Laioutr.

Headless commerce refers to the backend, the architecture decision that the commerce backend delivers its capabilities exclusively via APIs. Headless frontend refers to the storefront layer that has to talk to such a backend. The two belong together, but are two different layers of the same stack.

Headless frontend is an architecture decision within the commerce stack. Composable DXP is the overarching stack strategy, that is, the decision that all layers (backend, content, search, personalization, frontend) are modular and connected via APIs. Traditionally yes, Hydrogen, Vue Storefront, or custom Next.js setups require engineering capacity for build and maintenance. With a Frontend Management Platform like Laioutr, that shifts: marketing can work visually, engineering focuses on extending the platform instead of maintaining the frontend.

Not necessarily. If your shop turns over less than EUR 1M a year, has no multi-channel or performance requirements, and is happy with a standard theme, a classic stack may be enough. Headless pays off when performance, brand identity, multi-brand, or multi-region start to matter, or when the limits of a theme are blocking you.
