Akeneo

What is Akeneo?

Akeneo is a Product Information Management (PIM) system that centralises, enriches, and distributes product data across sales channels and markets. It provides a structured repository for product attributes, descriptions, media assets, categories, and locale-specific variants. Akeneo is used by retailers, manufacturers, and distributors to maintain consistent and complete product data across e-commerce storefronts, print catalogues, marketplaces, and B2B portals.

How it works

Akeneo organises product data into a flexible attribute model where attribute groups, families, and categories define the structure of each product type. Product variants are managed as product models with configurable axes. The platform supports multiple locales and channels, so a single product record can hold different values per market and distribution channel. Data is imported via flat files, the Akeneo REST API, or event-based connectors. Downstream systems consume enriched product data via the same REST API or via native connectors for commerce platforms.

Akeneo with Laioutr

Laioutr connects to Akeneo to pull enriched product attributes, descriptions, and media references into the frontend layer. Product detail pages, category listings, and comparison views are composed from Akeneo data without duplicating product records in the CMS or commerce backend.

Within the Composable Digital Experience Platform, Akeneo serves as the authoritative product data source feeding into Laioutr's rendering pipeline. The Content Management product handles the synchronization of Akeneo locale variants with the corresponding frontend locale, and Multi-Brand and Multi-Market capabilities ensure that Akeneo channel-scoped data maps correctly to each brand's storefront instance.
