Buy Online Pick Up In Store (BOPIS)
What is Buy Online Pick Up In Store (BOPIS)?
Buy Online Pick Up In Store, or BOPIS, lets shoppers reserve and pay for an order online and then collect it at a chosen physical store, usually within hours. It is one of the most direct expressions of omnichannel retail and depends on a tight loop between the storefront, the OMS, and store operations.
Definition
A BOPIS flow starts with the storefront querying the OMS for store-level availability of each SKU. The shopper picks a store, the OMS allocates the unit, marks it as a pick task in the store app, and notifies the customer when it is ready. The store associate picks, packs, and stages the order, scans it on handover, and the OMS closes the order. Pricing, taxes, returns rules, and loyalty points stay consistent with online, even though the physical movement happens at the store level. Composable stacks expose each step as APIs and events, which fits the event-driven architecture pattern and is often connected to the storefront via the storefront API and webhooks.
Why it matters
BOPIS turns the store network into an extension of the fulfillment grid, which lowers last-mile cost, raises store visit frequency, and unlocks attach sales when shoppers walk in to collect. For customers, it removes shipping fees and waiting time and offers a clear handover moment. From an OMS perspective, BOPIS is also a stress test for inventory accuracy: any drift between system stock and shelf reality directly produces canceled orders, which damages trust and operational metrics.
Use cases
A sporting goods retailer offers two-hour BOPIS in flagship stores and next-morning pickup in smaller satellites, with the OMS routing orders to the most appropriate node based on stock and labor capacity. A grocery chain uses BOPIS for non-perishables while keeping perishables on click and collect with timed slots. A fashion brand pairs BOPIS with in-store fitting rooms and instant returns, looping back into returns management and reverse logistics. Across these scenarios, BOPIS works because the OMS, the WMS, and the storefront stay synchronized and because fulfillment, personalization, and the customer journey are designed around the same single order record.
