Email Marketing
What is Email Marketing?
Email marketing is the practice of using email to communicate with customers and prospects to inform, engage, and sell. In commerce, it covers welcome flows, promotional campaigns, transactional confirmations, post-purchase follow-ups, abandonment recovery, and lifecycle nurturing.
Definition
Modern email marketing combines a customer database, segmentation logic, content templates, and a delivery platform. Programs are typically split between broadcast campaigns aimed at large segments and automated flows triggered by individual behaviors. Performance is tracked through metrics such as open rate, click-through rate, conversion rate, revenue per email, and unsubscribe rate.
Why it matters
Email remains one of the highest-return channels in commerce, in part because the brand owns the list and is not exposed to platform algorithm changes. It also handles long-tail communication that paid channels cannot afford to address. The challenge is to keep relevance high so that engagement stays strong and deliverability does not deteriorate.
Composable integration
In a composable architecture, email lives as a specialized service that integrates with the CDP for audience selection, the commerce engine for product and order data, and the content layer for rendering on-brand templates. Storefronts can deep-link from emails to personalized landing pages, with the same product and content data driving both surfaces.
