A headless frontend for JTL separates the storefront, everything shoppers see, from JTL-Wawi as the ERP with items, prices, stock and orders. The storefront connects via the JTL Platform API (GraphQL) and can be designed, extended and delivered independently of JTL-Shop templates.
Item master data, prices, stock, orders and shipping stay in JTL-Wawi. Established workflows in Wawi, WMS and marketplace integrations keep running unchanged.
Instead of the NOVA template, child templates and Smarty, the storefront is built in Laioutr Studio: visual, component-based and with code access for developers.
Laioutr reads product data through the JTL Cloud GraphQL API and caches it in Orchestr. No second item master, no CSV exports, no manual syncing.
JTL-Shop with the NOVA template is quick to set up. Custom designs, fast campaigns and strong Core Web Vitals, however, usually require child template development, plugin coordination and a service partner for changes. A custom build with Next.js or Nuxt on top of JTL-Wawi needs its own development team and a self-built integration layer. Laioutr closes this gap.
No ERP switch, no big-bang replatforming. The frontend is renewed while JTL processes for warehouse, shipping and marketplaces stay in place.
Product data and prices are not copied into a second system. They come through the JTL API, and JTL-Wawi remains the single source of truth.
Performance is not patched in later with plugins, it is built into the component stack: server-side rendering, edge delivery and optimized images. Core Web Vitals by default.
Marketing builds landing pages independently, developers extend components or build new ones. Both work on the same platform without blocking each other and without a ticket to the service partner.
One platform for multiple brands, countries and languages, with localized layouts, currencies and content. International scaling without a new frontend project per market.
Accessibility, GDPR and the German Accessibility Strengthening Act (BFSG) are built into the component standard. EU server location, German-speaking support, EU standard contract.
Laioutr is made for storefronts that change regularly, from the seasonal landing page to a complete headless storefront on JTL-Wawi.
Black Friday, sales, product launches: campaign pages are built by the marketing team, without template changes and without waiting in an agency queue.
One JTL-Wawi, multiple storefronts. Languages, currencies, layouts and assortments can be managed per market.
Product detail pages that fit the assortment instead of the template: with bundles, configurators, reviews and rich content.
Magazine content, buying guides and product listings on one platform, with one URL structure and a shared performance foundation.
Customer-group-specific assortments and content, restricted visibility and dedicated portal areas, with JTL-Wawi as the data foundation.
Layout variants, hero tests and sorting experiments run directly in Studio, without a code deploy.
JTL-Shop is JTL's free shop software, tightly integrated with JTL-Wawi and quickly ready to use with the NOVA template. For standard requirements that is a solid start. Laioutr is a Frontend Management Platform with a visual page builder, a component library and integrated hosting. Teams that want to steer design, campaigns and performance without template development, and keep other backends open, move faster with Laioutr.

All information is based on publicly available sources, conversations with e-commerce merchants in the DACH region and our own platform tests. As of September 2026. JTL-Shop features may have evolved since.
The assortment is manageable, the NOVA template covers most design and feature needs, frontend changes are rare, and a JTL service partner takes care of hosting, updates and customizations.
The storefront needs to be fast and distinctive, marketing should build pages independently, multiple brands or markets are planned, and adding another backend later should not mean a new frontend. JTL-Wawi remains the ERP throughout.
