Dealer Listings, Not Marketplaces: B2B Product Data Distribution

For manufacturers and brands with a dealer network, the most important channel is often not a marketplace but the retailer. Retailers want a listing spreadsheet in their own format, a product datasheet as a PDF and images they can pull themselves. B2B product data distribution therefore means deriving one output profile per retailer from a single canonical product and delivering it through self-service instead of email.

The channel that never makes it into the feed plan

Feed management is usually discussed as a marketplace and shopping topic: Google Merchant Center, Amazon, price comparison sites. For a manufacturer that sells through specialist retailers and wholesalers, that framing leaves out the channel that carries most of the volume.

In practice, listing data for dealers travels by email. Someone in sales or product management exports a spreadsheet, copies columns into the buyer's template, renames categories by hand and attaches a zip file of images. The next retailer sends a different template. Nobody calls this a channel, so nobody owns it, and yet every product launch depends on it.

We have argued before that channel output belongs in the frontend layer rather than in the systems that collect data. Dealer listings are the hardest test of that idea, because no output is less standardized.

What dealers actually ask for

Manufacturers with a dealer network typically put three requirements on the table.

  • A listing spreadsheet per retailer. Every buyer has their own column logic, their own category tree and their own mandatory fields. One wants net prices and packaging units, another wants customs tariff numbers and a short text that fits the field length of their shop.
  • Product datasheets. Sales teams and retailers want a clean PDF per product or per range, with technical attributes, images and current specifications.
  • A place to download everything. Retailers want to fetch listing data, images and datasheets when they need them. Some manufacturers want that page open to everyone, others only behind a login for approved partners.

None of these requests is exotic. They get hard because they multiply: every retailer adds a variant, and every product change has to reach all of them.

Step by step: one canonical product, many output profiles

The data modeling principle is simple: you maintain one canonical product and derive an output profile for each destination.

  1. Collect the templates. Gather every listing spreadsheet your retailers currently use. Mark mandatory fields, allowed values and field lengths.
  2. Clarify who owns which data. Attributes, classifications and media belong in your PIM as the product data source. Prices, packaging units and stock belong in your ERP as the commercial source. Retailer-specific additions, such as a dealer's own category name, need a defined home too, not a hidden column in someone's spreadsheet.
  3. Map each template once. Each retailer template becomes an output profile with field mapping, computed values, filters and exclusions. From then on, the template is filled automatically whenever data changes.
  4. Design datasheet templates. Define the layout once and render the PDF per product or per range from the same data.
  5. Decide how retailers receive data. A download page, a pull URL for retailers with their own systems, or an active push via SFTP, which many B2B partners already use.
  6. Validate before anything goes out. Check mandatory fields, allowed values, GTINs and price formats against each profile before release, not after a retailer complains.

The result is not one hand-maintained feed per retailer, but one product and a set of rules.

Datasheets and the retailer portal: self-service instead of requests

Product datasheets should be generated, not written. When the datasheet is a template filled from the same canonical product as the listing spreadsheet, a specification change reaches both at once.

The same logic applies to images. Instead of sending zip files, you give retailers stable image URLs that always deliver the current file. Replace a product photo, and every retailer using the link gets the new version.

A retailer portal ties this together. Retailers download listing data, images and datasheets whenever they need them, either from a public page or behind a login. For your sales team, "can you send me the current data?" becomes a link instead of a task.

Where Distributr fits, and where it doesn't

Before an export runs, validation checks the output against the channel definition. A diff guard compares the item count with the last run and blocks the export if the deviation exceeds your threshold. For developers: every channel is a typed definition in the repository, reviewed via pull request and reversible with a revert. What Distributr is not matters just as much. It is not a PIM, not a system of record, not an import or sync tool and not a PPC or repricing tool. Feed management tools built around shopping ads and marketplaces do their job well, typically with their own data storage and sync cycle. The concrete difference: Distributr distributes from the platform your storefront already runs on, so dealer outputs use the same data your customers see.

FAQ

Does Distributr replace our PIM?

No. Your PIM stays the source for product data and your ERP for commercial data. Distributr only handles the output side, using data Orchestr already provides.

Can every retailer get their own spreadsheet format?

Yes. Each retailer template is mapped once as its own output profile, with its own columns, categories and mandatory fields, and then filled automatically.

Do retailers need a login to download data?

That is your decision. The retailer portal can be a public download page or restricted to approved partners behind a login.

How is this different from feed tools for shopping ads?

Those tools focus on marketplace and ad channels and usually keep their own copy of your data. Distributr works without imports on data already in Laioutr and also covers B2B outputs such as listing spreadsheets, PDF datasheets and a retailer portal.
